But it is not the number of hours you actually spend at work, and it is not even the number of weekday hours on the calendar. Which figure you need depends on the question you are asking.

For pay, 2,080 is right even though you take holidays: salaried employees are paid for their holidays and paid vacation, so the salary covers all 52 weeks. For time, the lower numbers are closer to reality.
Why the calendar gives 2,088 hours, not 2,080
A year is 52 weeks plus one day (two in a leap year). Those extra days are weekdays most of the time, so most years have 261 weekdays, and 261 × 8 = 2,088 hours. 2024, a leap year that started on a Monday, had 262 weekdays. 2028 starts on a Saturday and has only 260.

Over a full 28-year calendar cycle the average is about 260.9 weekdays, or 2,087 hours. That is why the US Office of Personnel Management divides federal salaries by 2,087 to get hourly rates.
From hours to pay
Because 2,080 is roughly 2,000, there is a quick shortcut: double your hourly rate and add three zeros to get a rough yearly salary. $20 an hour is about $40,000 (exactly $41,600); $30 an hour is about $60,000 ($62,400). Going the other way, halve a salary and drop the zeros: $50,000 a year is about $25 an hour ($24.04).

The hours work takes that nobody counts
None of these figures include the commute. At the US average of about 27 minutes each way, a five-day commuter spends another 216 hours a year getting to and from work.
